Tankless Water Heater Services

Tankless units are excellent in the right house and a expensive disappointment in the wrong one. We'd rather tell you which yours is before you buy.

A tankless heater makes hot water on demand instead of keeping a tank hot around the clock. That means endless hot water and a much smaller footprint, but it also means the unit has to move a lot of energy quickly — which is why a conversion sometimes requires a larger gas line, a different vent, or an electrical upgrade. Those requirements are where conversion budgets get blown, and they're the first thing we check.

San Antonio water is hard, and hard water is the main thing that shortens a tankless unit's life. Scale builds on the heat exchanger, efficiency drops, and eventually the unit starts throwing error codes. Periodic descaling is genuinely maintenance, not an upsell, and we'll show you the manufacturer's own interval rather than inventing one.

Signs to watch for

When this is probably your problem

01Hot water that runs cold when a second fixture turns on
02The unit throwing error codes or shutting down mid-shower
03Noticeably longer wait for hot water than when it was new
04Reduced hot water flow rate over time
05Rumbling or whining from the unit during operation
06No descaling performed in several years on hard water
Scope

What's included — and what isn't

Included in the quoted price

  • Assessment of your gas, venting, and electrical capacity before recommending a unit
  • Installation of the tankless unit with correct venting and connections
  • Descaling service with a circulation pump and manufacturer-appropriate solution
  • Diagnosis and repair of serviceable components and error conditions
  • Verification of operation, temperature, and flow before we leave

Quoted separately

  • The tankless unit itself
  • Gas line upsizing required to meet the unit's demand
  • Electrical circuit work required for the unit or its controls
  • New venting runs, roof or wall penetrations, and associated patching
  • Isolation valve kits, if your existing install doesn't have them for future descaling
  • Permit and inspection fees where required
Pricing

How this job gets priced

Installs are quoted after a site visit, because the unit price is often the smaller half of the job — gas sizing and venting drive the real number. Descaling and diagnostic visits are flat-rate and quoted when you book. If a repair on an older unit costs more than a meaningful share of replacement, we'll say so rather than quietly doing the repair.

Step by step

What the visit looks like

STEP 01

Check what the house can support

Gas line size, vent path, and electrical capacity get evaluated before anyone picks a model.

STEP 02

Match the unit to real demand

Sizing is based on how many fixtures you actually run at once and incoming water temperature, not a generic chart.

STEP 03

Install to spec

Correct venting, isolation valves for future service, and connections done to manufacturer and code requirements.

STEP 04

Commission and hand over

We verify temperature, flow, and error-free operation, and show you the descaling interval.

About this service

Questions about tankless water heater services

Is tankless actually cheaper to run?

It uses less energy than keeping a tank hot around the clock, so operating costs generally drop. Whether that recovers the higher purchase and installation cost depends on your usage, your rates, and how long you stay in the house. For a household that already goes through a lot of hot water, the case is stronger. For light usage, the honest answer is that you may be buying convenience more than savings.

Why does my tankless unit run cold when someone else turns on a tap?

Usually it's a flow-rate limit — the unit can only heat so many gallons per minute, and running two demanding fixtures at once exceeds it. Sometimes it's scale buildup reducing capacity. Either way it's diagnosable: a descale may recover it, or the unit may simply be undersized for the way your household uses water.

How often does a tankless heater need descaling?

On hard water like ours, most manufacturers recommend roughly annual descaling, and that interval is in your unit's manual. If your installation doesn't have isolation valves, descaling is harder than it should be — that's worth fixing at the next service.

Can you convert my tank heater to tankless?

Often yes, but a conversion isn't just a swap. The gas line frequently needs upsizing, venting is different, and some units need dedicated electrical. We check all three before quoting, so the number you get includes what the conversion actually requires.
